Job Summary

This is an hourly position serving clients in the Tri-Cities community. The Child and Youth Care Worker provides one to one support to children and youth with special needs.  This is a community access program focusing on functional life skills and community integration.  The key purpose is to help the children and youth we serve to improve their quality of life, improved social interaction, increased communication ability and recreation skills with peers; and provide opportunities to develop skills for increased independence in the areas of personal care, home living and community access.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Supporting children and youth with Developmental Disability, a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder or high medical needs.
  • Develop, review and evaluate a child specific service plan that includes specific goals to be addressed during the term of service.
  • Provide role-modelling and coaching for age-appropriate peer, friend and family interactions.
  • Increase access to neighbourhood venues to develop transportation, money management, and shopping skills.
  • Increase access to community facilities and leisure opportunities.  Increase home living skills such as food preparation, home management, and care of clothing.
  • Increase street safety awareness.
  • Assist youth to complete transition to adulthood activities.
  • Connect children and youth to community and specialized services and supports.
  • Liaise and communicate with the family to schedule services, and provide regular verbal feedback about weekly activities, and child or youth participation, strengths and challenges.
  • Provide or arrange transportation to support service activities.
  • Complete specific training where necessary to provide service to a particular child or youth.
  • Implement components of Behaviour Support Plans, as required to support a child or youth in the community.
  • Participate in Integrated Case Management meetings upon request.
  • Develop positive and supportive relationships with referred clients, their families and other significant figures in the child/youth’s life as well as professional relationships in all environments.
  • Identify and utilize appropriate community resources and programs as part of a goal oriented plan.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records, statistics.
  • Complete timesheets, billing forms, and progress reports as scheduled.
Education and Qualifications
  • Child and Youth Care Worker Certificate, diploma or a degree; or a degree in a comparable human/social services field.
  • Two years’ Experience working with special needs children/youth.
  • Knowledge of child development.
  • Ability to identify health and safety issues for children and youth.
  • Proficient instructional skills.
  • Good organization, time and general management skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the business community, other program staff, therapists, social workers, other related staff and professional consultants and families.
  • Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training or the MANDT system is an asset.
  • Significant computer skills preferred.
Other Information
  • Flexibility to meet with families, children/youth on evenings and weekends is required.
  • Services to client include 4 hours per week up to one year on a consistent weekly basis.
  • Vehicle preferred for this position.
  • Must have class 5 driver’s license.
  • Attend mandatory agency day training/presentations.
  • Union membership is required for this position.
  • Current First Aid and Clear Criminal Record Check.
